MAKERSPACE IDEAS

Don't fall into the trap of getting equipment that you don't need, or don't have the time or resources to use. We all have big dreams, but let's be real, if you don't have the staff to man the equipment, don't buy it. Start simple by using items that you already have, and items that do not require training for students, staff, and teachers. If you have a skill or hobby, then start there. Finally, don't reinvent the wheel, search the internet for easy to do ideas and projects.

Writing/Poster Making center

Don't know where to start? With $50 you can create a Writing/Poster Making center. Put out all of your items on a table and your students will create on their own with little to no instruction.

Items needed:

  • table/counter space

  • butcher paper holder/cutter

  • butcher paper

  • markers, pencils, crayons

Upgrade your center with: scissors, glue, glitter, tape assortment, and other craft items. Washi and Duct tape are very popular with students.

Green screen area

Another $50 project idea. Turn your space into a student video making space with very little money, space and instruction time. Instruction can be led by you, teachers, volunteers, or other staff members. Your older students are very tech savvy and they can take on this project with very little instruction.

OPTION 1

Paint an entire wall or partial wall with green paint. Do not waste your money on expensive "green screen" paint. Pantone color for chroma key green is 354c. Flat or flat enamel paint works best for this project. Here are paints that work well:

  • 'Sparkling Apple' Behr (color code #S-G-430) Lowes &Home Depot

  • "Clover Patch" by Behr (color code #P-400-6) Lowes & Home Depot

  • "Neon Green" by Sherwin Williams & Benjamin Moore

OPTION 2

Collapsible Reversible Popup Green/Blue Screen Backdrop

Collapsible screens can be mounted to walls and they come in different sizes. Leave these unmounted and allow them to be checked out by staff and students.

Upgrade your center with tripods with phone and/or iPad holders, lighting, and lighting umbrellas.

Cardboard Construction

Cardboard construction is another cheap and easy way to challenge your students with STEM projects. One project can help teach math, engineering, art, and help recycle household items. This is also a great way to introduce career choices to you students.
